MQM being targeted for standing against sectarian violence: Raza Haroon –

Posted in Karachi, MQM on 31.08.12

The workers and office-bearers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) are being targeted in Karachi because of the party’s stand against rising sectarian violence, said party leader Raza Haroon during a coordination committee press conference on Friday.

It is a fact that MQM contained the sectarian violence in Karachi. Karachi’s residents have witnessed horrific sectarian violence in 1980s.

PTI leaders declare assets

Posted in General on 25.08.12

Following Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s announcement of its economic policy, key leaders of the party on Friday declared their assets. The assets were uploaded on the party’s official website.

Leaders who declared their assets include Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Javed Hashmi, Dr Arif Alvi, Jahangir Tareen, Asad Umar, Fauzia Kasuri, Nadir Leghari and Shireen Mazari.

I think PTI has established good precedent. Other parties should follow the example. I wonder if they have courage to do that.

Now I advise people to wear proper gear. We should use good quality motorcycle boots, jackets and helmets. It protects us from sever impacts. Tourmaster and Alpinestars are popular boot brands in the market.

Posted in MQM on 21.08.12

Tension has gripped the Padidan town of Naushehro Feroze after a clash between MQM and JSQM supporters. According to reports, the clashs started between the groups when a group of MQM supporters tried to remove flags of JSQM.

Successive Sindh government has failed to made any clear-cut policy over chalking and flag hosting . We should make a law on this and order poltical parties to remove their flags.

Audit Report: Embezzled from the accounts of the City District Government

Posted in General on 11.08.12

Taxpayer’s money: Govt watchdog finally gets a look at Karachi’s books – The Express Tribune

For the first time in over a decade, the auditor general in Pakistan has been allowed access to the financial records of local governments in Sindh.

The highlight of the Karachi report is that it detected 56 cases of financial mismanagement that totalled Rs1.4 billion out of a total city budget of Rs28.6 billion for 2010-11.

This money was supposed to go to water and sanitation schemes, pedestrian bridges, roads, medicine and equipment for district government hospitals and dispensaries.

It is suspected that Rs367 million was embezzled from the accounts of the City District Government, Karachi. The money was withdrawn on the pretext of dealing with a natural calamity but there are no records on how the money was spent and there is no evidence of a disaster or calamity in Karachi.

The question is:  Why this report has been published after four years?

It appears that government want to take political mileage from the publication of this report. MPA Ghulam Mujadid Isran said:

Billion of rupees have been mismanaged during the nazim system that started from 2001.

He is himself a member of the the financial watchdog. Why did he wait so long? It was the responsibility of the PPP government to audit the accounts and bring the irregularities or corruption to light.

Correspondents should not add their views in stories: citizens fed up with forced collection of fitra ransacked the office of the MQM

Posted in Karachi, MQM on 03.08.12

MQM office ransacked as anger runs high in Orangi – The Express Tribune

In an unusual turn of events, citizens fed up with forced collection of fitra ransacked the office of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in Orangi Town on Thursday.

This is a serious development if the reports are true than it will pose a problem for MQM in the coming elections. I would like to express one thing here correspondents who report incidents should not add their views in their stories.

The paper reproted:

On Wednesday night, 22-year-old trader Muhammad Shahid and Ikhlas Rasool, 13, were shot dead in a brawl between Shahid and some people, who had come to collect fitra. Another youngster, Danish Saleem, was injured in the clash.

“Shahid was being pressured to pay Rs40,000 as fitra,” said an official of Pakistan Bazar police station. “When he refused to comply, a heated argument ensued and some gunshots were also fired.”

I think this man is not telling the the truth. There is no doubt MQM has started collecting Fitra, but they are asking the amount, which is printed on receipt. It is Rs. 80/-  My friends and family members living in Karachi said they no one pestered them for extra money. They came and collected the Fitra.
